Modern Media Review
During COVID, I was asked by Modern Media Review, an on-line British satire journal, to write a column called "Letters from America". I was the “American correspondent” and my blogs were directed to the British audience. My main goal was to tease the Brits and, in doing so, to find commonality between us. Some of the articles .. actually all of them .. are dated now, but the voice should get across. And hopefully, the humor.
MMR had monthly themes, which the articles spoke to. I also tried to get a rock quote in every article. Just a little something to make it even more challenging for me. I also tried to work sex into the columns, occasionally. Sex sells! I didn't get three monthly readers just by accident!
There were 19 installments of "Letters from America". Here's a small sampling …
-
First article I wrote for MMR, “taking the piss” on the British broadcasting system. Letter from America, part one: Cheese, TV and modern media in the UK
-
Movie reviews of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman” (but really about The UK’s Theft and Cultural Appropriation of American Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll!): Letter from America, part eight: Bohemian Rocketman – Modern Media Review Podcast
-
Brexit: Letter from America, part six: So you’re getting divorced … – Modern Media Review Podcast
-
“Anglocreep” and “Americreep” (our differing accents): Letter from America, part four: 21 Savage and the New British Accent
- Movie Review of “Once Upon A Time in America”: The theme for the month on MMR was “Nostalgia”. This is a bit “headier” and not about Britain at all, but one of my favorites to write and re-read. Letter from America, part twelve: Nostalgic fiction and fictional nostalgia
- Jeffrey Epstein: True story! I actually went to camp with Jeffrey Epstein! Letter from America, part eleven: I went to camp with Jeffrey Epstein
- Big Pharma Chases Big Poop: The US pharmaceutical industry is prepared to spend billions researching human feces. Letter from America, part five.

The Secret Meaning of Bonnie Raitt's “Love Me Like A Man”: Letter from America, part 19: Qatar and the secret meaning of Bonnie Raitt’s ‘Love Me Like a Man’
